Supplemental Post #1: Marilyn Monroe Towers

This is my stretch of a post to talk about Marilyn Monroe's influence in the world of architecture. Yea, you read that right. Ok not really influence, but just an interesting comparison. This set of skyscrapers in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, formally known as Absolute World, a residential condominium complex designed by MAD architects, has gained the nickname "Marilyn Monroe Towers" by the city's residents because of its voluptuous form which bears an uncanny resemblance to Monroe.
Now of course one could say its just a cool curvy looking building and what do you mean it looks like Marilyn Monroe? But I find it interesting that it has gained that name. In class we talked about Marilyn as a sex symbol, that's what she is remembered for. When we think of Marilyn we don't think about the roles she played/ how great of an actress she was. We remember her for her sex appeal and her body: those famous curvy assets. Now I know it wasn't the designer's intent to design a building that looked like Marilyn Monroe's body, but the fact that people nicknamed it so because of it's curvy sexy form says a lot about how we think about one of Hollywood's most beloved stars.
